Darwin's Favourite Daughter


Jessica Mauboy Jessica Mauboy is an R&B singer, songwriter and actress, she is often referred to as Darwin's favourite daughter and there is no doubt that she has become one of Australia's all-time favourites too.

Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born on the 4th August 1989 and started her career in 2006, when she was runner up on the fourth season of Australian Idol after auditioning for the talent show in Alice Springs earlier in the year.

She told the auditioning judges at the time that her plan was to pursue a recording career.

Jessica Mauboy has certainly realized her dream in a very short space of time and is currently enjoying great success both in Australia and overseas.

On completing Idol she received a recording contract with Sony Music Australia and in February 2007, she released her debut live album, 'The Journey', which debuted at number four on the album charts, and certified gold in sales.

The album contained selected songs Jessica had performed as part of the top twelve on Idol.

Later that year, she became a member of the multi-platinum selling girl group Young Divas and while with them was part of their album 'New Attitude' which was released in November.

The lead single, 'Turn Me Loose', was released on 3 November and reached and reached number 15 on the singles charts.

Jessica left the group in 2008 to resume her solo career and in November released her debut studio album, 'Been Waiting', which peaked within the top fifteen of the ARIA Albums Chart, and produced her first number one single, 'Burn', as well as the album's other top ten hits, 'Because' and 'Running Back'.

At the 2009 ARIA Music Awards she received seven nominations for the album and singles plus she was nominated for 'Highest Selling Album', 'Best Pop Release', 'Breakthrough Artist Album', 'Best Female Artist', 'Breakthrough Artist Single' for 'Running Back', and 'Highest Selling Single' for 'Running Back' and 'Burn'.

Eventually she received the award for 'Highest Selling Single' for 'Running Back'.

'Been Waiting' went on to be certified as double platinum for sales and became the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009.

In early 2010, Jessica Mauboy made her acting debut in the film adaptation of the Aboriginal musical, Bran Nue Dae. In the film she played the role of Rosie, a local church singer who has a love interest for a school boy named Willie.

The film was well received and opened another chapter in the life of this young and exciting new Australian talent.

Later that year she travelled to the United States to work on her new album with a wide range of American songwriters and producers and in November 2010, released her second studio album, 'Get 'em Girls', which debuted at number six on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold.

The album features the top-ten hit, 'Saturday Night', with American rapper Ludacris.

In 2011 Jessica Mauboy secured a lead role in the film, The Sapphires, based on the successful stage show of the same name. The film also starred Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens, and Miranda Tapsell.

In the film Jessica played the role of Julie McCrae, one of four Indigenous Australian singers who travel from a mission in Victoria to Vietnam to sing for American troops.

It was an exciting time when Jessica and the cast attended the film's premiere at the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in France on 20th May 2012.

In July 2012, she released 'Gotcha', the lead single from The Sapphires' soundtrack album of the same name, which peaked at number 43, becoming her lowest charting single to date.

The film premiered in Australia during the Melbourne Film Festival on 2 August 2012 and Jessica's performance earned her an award for 'Best Actress in a Supporting Role', and an Australian Film Critics Association award for 'Best Supporting Actress'.

At the 2012 ARIA Music Awards, Jessica Mauboy received three nominations in the categories of 'Best Female Artist', 'Best Pop Release' for 'Gotcha', and 'Song of the Year' for 'Galaxy'.

In February 2013, it was announced that her recorded version of Etta James' 'Something's Got a Hold on Me' would be used as the theme song for the 2013 NRL season. The song was released as a single on 27th February and received good radio airplay.

It has also been announced that Jessica will become a mentor for the upcoming second season of the very popular TV show 'The Voice' in Australia, and will pair up with coach Ricky Martin to prepare the contestants in his team for the show's battle rounds.

There is no doubt that Jessica Mauboy is young, beautiful, talented and will certainly go a long way in the music, acting and entertainment business in Australia.
